Former Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South East, Chris Andrews, has been making headlines this week for applying to join Sinn Féin.
Sinn Féin’s national executive is expected to consider his application to join the party over the weekend. When former members of other parties want to join Sinn Féin, the persons membership application has to be ratified by the Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle.
Unfortunately Chris has legacy issues, not so much his past membership of Fianna Fáil, but his online tweeting activities. The long deleted twitter account of @brianformerff purported to be a disillusioned Fianna Fáil activist. The reality being, it was Chris Andrews tweeting under @Brianformerff anonymously. The majority of his tweets consisted of him criticising the Fianna Fáil leadership, constituency colleagues and getting into arguments with genuine Fianna Fáil activists. He was eventually outed in a elaborate sting.
An issue with twitter and the internet in general, is once its out there and you try to remove posts or tweets, its like trying to taking piss out of a swimming pool. Its impossible.
The social analytics company Topsy now offers the entire history of public tweets on Twitter, meaning that anyone can now search through it to find specific tweets.
Searching Topsy for @Brianformerff threw up some interesting tweets. While it didn’t show tweets from @Brianformerff because the account is deleted, it did show people who had retweeted and replied to his tweets.
Chris Andrews tweeting under @Brianformerff had some things to say about Sinn Féin. They were retweeted by Sinn Féin member and twitter user Buzzoneill.
Hows that membership application going Chris ?
Seeing as Chris has connections in Syria, maybe we could send him over to broker peace talks.

Sinn Féin probably have very little to gain electorally by adding Chris Andrews to their ticket. His hit and miss record and the polling booth suggests his few electoral successes are because of the family name. His Grandfather was one of the founders of Fianna Fáil after all. His father and uncle, Niall and David were both Fianna Fáil TDs as was his cousin Barry. Fianna Fáil royalty no less.
Chris Andrews electoral record.
