Fianna Fail Senator Paschal Mooney wont get into your Taxi if you are foreign.

Taxi drivers are in the news quite a bit lately and are getting a bit of bad press, and that’s just the pasty white Irish guys. A former RTE Prime time investigation showed one in seven taxi drivers has a previous criminal conviction.

Former RTE presenter, Fianna Fail Senator Paschal Mooney, landed himself in hot water today with remarks that could be construed as racist, during a debate on new taxi regulations. His remarks against foreign taxi drivers are all the more bizarre considering he has been a leading campaigner for the undocumented Irish in the United States. Who are ehh foreign. Paschal has only ever been elected to the Seanad,  he couldn’t even  get elected to his native Leitrim County council a few years ago, garnering just over 300 votes.

A harmless sort of Politician this is all he will be remembered for….

The remark that will hang around his neck…..I wont get into to a cab if its an obvious non national….. He followed that up by saying…….. that’s nothing got to do with their skin colour…. Mmmm Ok

When the Minister with direct responsibility for rural transport was last in the House he talked about the importance of the rural transport programme and the need to integrate it. The rural transport programme was launched in 2006 following a pilot scheme. There are now 36 schemes operating across the country delivering services directly to the core base of older people and people with disabilities. These schemes use private transport and some have launched volunteer driving schemes. In my area the Leitrim Development Company uses some of its Pobal funding to run buses and to fund the voluntary rural lift scheme — where volunteer drivers take people to appointments and to the shops. In this case, the Leitrim Development Company provides training for volunteer drivers so that they understand how to manage and cope with older people getting in and out of cars and how to keep them safe. The work is basic and ordinary but is extraordinarily important. There is also the CLASP scheme in south-east Sligo and the County Sligo leader partnership project. We are well served with those schemes in the area. The importance of the schemes nationwide to older people must not be under-estimated. By and large they are run by people involved in the community and voluntary sector.

You are a sarcastic idiot. Please, learn to actually put forward a valid argument or shut this site down. You are just embarrassing yourself. Maybe he had a point? look behind your obvious need to find the race card here, but all he was saying is that if the driver doesn’t know his/her way around, and they have little English, it can be very difficult and frustrating. We should take a leaf out of the British’s book, they have a difficult exam for potential drivers to pass. Obviously, the one here is very flawed or there is a way of bypassing it. Also, linking to videos that have not got the whole clip uploaded is a disgrace. We need to see the whole thing, not just what YOU want us to see.

Hmmm? “We need to see the whole thing” says anonymous person. Irony? Dishonesty?

  4. PASCHAL MOONEY says:

I ACCEPT THAT MY REMARKS WERE OFFENSIVE,UNACCEPTABLE AND STUPID AND HAVE PUBLICLY APOLOGISED. I AM NOT A RACIST BUT IN ADDRESSING THAT PROBLEM OF TAXI DRIVERS IN DUBLIN WHO DID NOT TAKE THE KNOWLEDGE TEST I SHOULD NOT HAVE INCLUDED RACE OR COLOUR IN MY ARGUMENT.
i HAVE ALWAYS PROMOTED HUMAN RIGHTS AND PROTECTION OF MINORITIES AND DEEPLY REGRET THIS LAPSE OF JUDGEMENT.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Senator, the videos not made by me, were taken from YouTube that were uploaded by someone who described himself as a “republican socalist”. You can probably figure out the rest.

      Paul.

  5. It needs to be noted that the assumption someone who is NOT white is not Irish is deep, rancid racism of the worst order. Senator Mooney’s total & abject apology and his courage in restating that apology on the blog that exposed him means he is a better in reality than he was in that video clip.
