“See women for what they really are: something to be enjoyed and used”
Who said that I wondered? Ted Bundy? Jeffery Dahmer? John Wayne Gacy?
No, it was an anonymous blogger, coward and misogynist that goes by the name GalwayPlayer. HHe wrote an opinion piece that is in Wednesdays edition of the Galway Independent.
I have come across GalwayPlayer in the past, long before he started blogging or the Galway Independent started to publish him (advertising must be down). His twitter account has for a long time been a sexist, tasteless tirade against women that don’t agree with him or give him the brush off. He and his cheerleaders frequently refer to women as bitches. He happily re-tweets these vile sexist tweets.
Anyone that knows me personally will tell you, I am not the most politically correct person in the world. Neither do I wholly subscribe to gender quotas or the feminist theory that the financial crash happened because it was men in charge. But I do have a daughter, a sister and female friends, the thoughts of them as something to be used, enjoyed and discarded as playthings is not merely offensive it is a dangerous train of thought.
In the last few weeks we have seen the murders of three of 3 Irish women. Jill Meagher in Australia, Catherine Gowing in Wales and Pregnant Aoife Phelan in County Laois. Women, murdered by men who used and discarded them as if they were nothing but a mere after thought.
What kind of message was the Galway Independent trying to send to young men by publishing this vile cretin? That it is ok to use and objectify women in a manner that would not be out-of-place in a sex offenders wing in prison ? The Galway Independent continued in the shameless promotion of the article on their Facebook page in quite a remarkably insensitive manner.
Intelligence not required to see what is wrong with those Facebook posts.
Not only has the Galway Independent shown remarkable lack of judgement. It has also put its own advertising revenue at risk. The decision to publish the piece by Galwayplayer smacks of desperation and the need to generate publicity for the free-sheet newspaper regardless, whether it is good or bad publicity. Are things so bad that they felt the need to publish a piece that was deliberately provocatively insulting ?
If it was the kind of controversial piece that would generate healthy debate, fine. It wasn’t, it was a childish attempt humour who’s underlying message was that it is ok to treat other human beings with contempt and disdain. Would you treat a co-worker, or person of a different race as something to be used and enjoyed ?
It was the opinion piece of a sexually frustrated woman hating man.
Has no one at the Galway Independent or any other media outlets that gave him publicity in the last few days, even read his blog ?
Galwayplayer’s blog and twitter feed are nothing but poor attempts at humour with an underlying current of misogyny and sexism.
Would you like any of your friends or family to be used by Galwayplayer ?
